This book describes how I use Structural Integration
Bodywork along with a set of other, complementary techniques, in a series
of sessions, to remove weeks, months and years of tension and stress, and
to “transform” the body and its energies into a more “un”-stressful
condition, including removing chronic back and other pains.
INTRODUCTION - from
the book The
Structural Integration Method of Connective Tissue manipulation (often
called “Bodywork” in this booklet) was developed in the 1950's and 1960's
by a PhD physiologist/biochemist in order to fix people's problems that
other methods of physical therapy, medicine and chiropractic could not
fix. This is a hands-on manipulation of the soft connective
tissue of the body, a substance that surrounds and goes through every
structural muscle and internal organ. It is not massage. It was discovered that everyone grows up with contracted soft connective tissue. And this contraction creates an underlying ground of continuous physical and emotional stress. This shortened connective tissue distorts our ideal, or “biologically designed” body alignment, and it limits our flexibility quite a lot. In addition, it makes us more susceptible to the negative effects of further stress. We’re just too tight, and we relate to our world from a “tight” state of mind. That “state” causes us to “automatically” behave in ways that are limited. And by acting from a tense condition, they will create even more tightness. Now, many people do get physical treatments to remove tightness, but those treatments don’t correct this underlying, systemic contraction that’s developed throughout the entire body. It has been repeatedly demonstrated that massage, acupressure, physical therapy, psychology, chiropractic and standard medicine do comparatively little to correct the shortness and distortions in the connective tissue form. They do have their own positive effects, and I, myself, have gotten benefits from all of them. But when people were treated with my sessions of Structural Integration Bodywork, very significant improvements in muscle length, looseness, and relaxation occurred immediately, and got noticeably better and better as the treatments improved more of the body. In addition, many people I’ve treated commented that they got more out of their massage, chiropractic, yoga and even psychotherapy after they’d had even part of the whole Structural Integration series. These benefits are repeatable; they’re natural results of correcting the accumulated systemic contraction. The results of my Bodywork treatments have always been a more tension free, healthier person who stays more tension free even when subjected to increases in physical and emotional stress. In addition, old patterns of psychological distress were noticeably reduced. And there was a study done in California that showed 25 of 33 mental hospital patients got a noticeable reduction in both the frequency and intensity of their anxiety reactions. I, myself, also treat people for specific aches and pains, for general tightness, and to improve their physical abilities, whether debilitated or not. My clientele has included people from ages 5 to 80. I have also
developed some very thorough, wholistic programs for personal growth and
stress release, combining the Structural Integration Bodywork with other,
state-of-the-art complementary therapies. The rest of this booklet
explains a lot of my Stress Release and Rejuvenation program in detail. Now, in this
book, I explain that we treat tight heads, and that the overall
manipulation system removes a lot of built up tightness from the entire
body, while it literally removes stress right out of it. Structural Integration Bodywork is very effective for stress removal and helps tight heads. Loosening the many bones and muscles of the head increases comfort and relaxation in the entire body. The many pieces of the head should move, as we breathe and when we express ourselves. But they get very tight, especially during stress. That adversely affects the back and neck, the nervous system, the ability to breathe deeply, all the internal organs, our emotional capacity, and our abilities to think clearly and process large amounts of information. The head connects to the very top of the spine, and in addition, the muscles of the head connect directly, or through interconnections, to the neck vertebrae. So tightness in the head makes the whole spine, all the vertebra and disk connections, rather tight. I have found that everyone’s heads get tight, especially people who have had personal or business stress.
In my own treatments for stress, I first do a lot of loosening and
lengthening on the head, neck, shoulders and back which makes a big
improvement right away. This almost always loosens people’s spines
all the way down the back and more energy even flows to the feet. People
can feel it. In addition, through reflex points, acupuncture energy flows
and a direct ligament-muscle connection, the internal organs are also
affected by the structural head condition. I have had people’s abdomens
relax a lot and their emotional stress dissipate away just while I was
loosening their heads. Here’s an example from a Psychological therapist, someone who always uses the head to look, think and use facial and verbal expressions to treat patients with. This person is also a trained Structural Integration Bodyworker as well. My head,
which Lou worked on a lot, feels more relaxed, and there’s more
warmth and circulation in it. I have more energy yet I’m more
relaxed at the same time. I feel better all over, and the treatment
felt really fine.
Stress and back pain are related. Having back pain, in itself, can
make us feel stressed. In fact,
when people have bad back pain, it
often stops their whole lives. And many treatments, including just rest,
often take a long time to give satisfactory benefits. This treatment, on
the other hand, is designed to correct the tightness and structural
misalignment that cause the back pain. Further, the benefits last for a long time, and the improvements are cumulative. Just a few hours can help many conditions a lot, and the corrections can last weeks and months. When more of the body is improved, what felt better from the previous sessions gets even better and the benefits last even longer. Here are a couple of examples.
I never had this quick a response to any treatment, and I've been
dealing with the same lower back problem for 20 years. Usually, when
it hurts it lasts for 4-5 days and I have to totally rest (except to go to
work). Even then, when I walk around I have extreme difficulty. Just 3 hours
treatment removed the pain from a flare-up of a 6-year
old back problem, and it stayed away for a few months. Another 2-hour
treatment then also kept the pain away for a few months. In both cases,
my overall tightness diminished, my posture was more upright,
and my movement and balance were easier. We're also more susceptible to the effects of stress when we're already tightened up from the misaligned shape of the body. This shape, with a big arch in the lower back, often causes back pain, especially lower back pain and/or sciatica. We're not very "stress immune" because of this either. The entire back of the body, including the head, neck and legs, is being held tight. So the body is already in a stressed and tense condition. And added tightness due to the next stress just tightens it up more. Just a little bit more tightness from the emotional reaction can bring on the back pain or make it worse. Also, emotional tension in the gut tightens the muscles connected to the vertebrae in the lower back. Some people may get immediate lower back pain or sciatica whenever this happens. This structural misalignment also creates a stressful behavior, one in which we "have to keep going." We're pulled down in front and we're constantly arching the lower back to pull ourselves up. The body posture says, "I have to keep straining, even just in everyday life." After this shape has been corrected and the body was more balanced and centered, a number of people have been able to "let down" from intense work and do more things for themselves.
Here is what a business owner said. He’d had a big arch in his
lower back with a lot of tightness all over his body, including the head. Structural Integration Bodywork is purposely designed to correct this misalignment and remove the chronic tension. Working the whole body, months and years of accumulated stress are removed at the same time that tightness all over the body is re-lengthened and the shape is more straightened out. Built-up emotional charge in the tissues gets erased, too. Faces look more open, less strained or "scrunched up," and even younger. Eyes get more relaxed. Neck tension is reduced. Here are two examples. Most of the
time I've felt tense. In just the first session I felt like I relaxed
years. I feel I can let those years go now, and I can move forward.
I feel like I can think smoothly. And I don't ever recall feeling this
good in the past 10 years.
My body
doesn't hurt anymore. My headaches are gone; so is the
neck pain, low back pain and the daily shoulder pain. The
tightness in my chest is gone and I can take deep breaths. I'm
physically stronger. I can do more than I've ever been able to do,
for longer. I sleep better and I look much better.
The body is literally "reformed" and "cleaned up," and its
tissue quality and metabolism is healthier. So it works a lot better
physically & is more stress resistant as well. People find the old stress
they had is gone, they don't tighten up in stressful situations as much as
they used to, and they let go of their tensing up faster. And pains due
to accumulated tightness are routinely removed. I
don't tense up now in what used to be stressful situations,
particularly those regarding expectations, such as my sons' doing well in
school. Now I just take it as it comes.
From 3 hours of Bodywork and “Structural
Stretching,”
the most
significant result was that my TMJ is much better.
Before, pressing around in front
of the ear would always hurt a lot. In fact, all the area was
excruciating when I pressed with even the slightest touch. Now, only a
couple of spots are “slightly” sensitive.
From this Bodywork,
I also sleep very
deep, much better than before. This overall openness and "unblocking" has helped many people express themselves more openly and more confidently. And their minds were calmer and clearer. A lot of their old fears due to tension and embedded negative emotions, were now gone. My own special multi-faceted program, Postural Integration Plus increases these stress release benefits from the bodywork alone, and adds more personal development. It's especially helpful for trauma release, too, from very old as well as recent experiences. The energies we absorbed during the past trauma still stay inside the body and therefore keep making our reactions to current stress more than they should be.
When we remove the old emotional energies created inside us during past
stressful experiences, we no longer react in such a stressful way to our
current stressful experiences. Netherton and Reichian Therapy
techniques add a lot to the releasing we can do with the Bodywork itself.
They can actually get out the deeper energies in the organs and remove the
negative "belief systems" that say we should get so tensed up in those
kinds of situations.
I've had a lot of good results from the cumulative sessions of bodywork
and bodymind therapies.
I was most impressed with the personal growth I developed. The
combination of physical and emotional treatments together gave me insight
into different parts of myself, and the bodywork "opened me up" so I could
take advantage of the verbal and emotional therapy.
I began a series of Bodywork and
Body-mind releasing treatments soon after my father died. I was
feeling sad, depressed, and dissatisfied with all my relationships in
general. In the first session I released a lot of pent up frustration as
well as grief and felt "100%" better. Through succeeding sessions
I've developed a greater, and growing, sense of well being and self
worth. One other thing many people say is that they feel more “in” their bodies.
I developed a much greater sense of how the physical
parts connected together and I felt increased energy flowing
throughout my body. I feel looser and more whole at the
same time. This release
of actual energetic substance and physical tension has literally
created more space in my body. I can now get more fully “into my body”
and bring in more oxygen and life-force. This description will explain how the very process of stress removal, with THIS system, is actually transforming people into Higher Performing Beings, no matter what we are doing. These improvements are bringing us more toward our “designed” behavior, but we haven’t been able to see nor use it because of all the tightness we’ve had distorting us. As we are transformed more and more into the proper functioning system, we quite naturally have to be removing the negative aspects of the distorted system, and that includes the tightness and negative emotional charge from past stress. As you read the explanation, you will see what we’re really made up of, and how we can make ourselves better in this way.
Essentially, the
processing makes the good parts of you bigger, and better, while it makes
the bad parts smaller. So I have a slogan, I MAKE WHO YOU ARE
BETTER, SO EVERYTHING YOU DO IS BETTER !
I'd had 10 hours of Lou's Structural Bodywork in 3 days and it vastly
improved my overall physical condition. The emotional and spiritual
benefits have been tremendous, too. Psychosomatically I was already a
spiritually oriented person, and a nice person. But I now see that the
energies that had developed inside me were restricted by the tightness of
my structural muscles. These distortions in my different physical parts
(due to tightness) had been significantly limiting my expression as a
fuller, more whole person. The parts were somewhat blocked and they
were not "integrated" with each other. Now, my head feels connected to my
torso and they're connected to my legs. "We" all work together smoother
and more naturally. And the amount of energy coming through me, and out
of me, is greater. Finally, I’m including a long testimonial from a 59-year-old medical doctor. It summarizes a lot of the points I’ve shared above, including how back pain can lower a person’s quality of life and, reading between the lines, see how that’s a stressful condition, for the person, and for his or her family. And the physical and emotional things we do, in an accumulation of stressful and effortful times, can lead to this ongoing, “body,” stressful and painful situation. This testimonial is about purely physical improvements done with just the Bodywork, and how that positively changed this person and it literally, turned back the clock on her physical tightnesses and chronic back pain. I worked on this doctor in a chiropractic office, alternating treatments with a good chiropractor, someone who also did a lot of applied kinesiology. This doctor was such a very nice person. And she’d had a tremendous amount of structural tightness when we started and it had significantly impinged on her life. Even though she wasn’t “stressed out,” like from work, that debility was definitely a stressful situation. And I’m sure that the stress of having to treat patients for many years contributed to her overall tightness and back pain. I was very happy
I could help her so much. The whole treatment of 2-hours to 4-hours a
week lasted a couple of months. (Nowadays, because of my improved
technique and added experience, I can do a lot more in a week or two.)
Here is what she said. INTRODUCTION CHAPTER 2 After You’re
Relaxed and Loosened with Some Initial Bodywork, We Do A Guided Relaxation
Process with Combined with Light “Jin Shin” Style Acupressure: The
Bodywork releases contracted soft connective tissue. But within
the shape of our muscles’ connective tissue wrappings, we also accumulate
tense muscle fiber action because we “forget” to turn off a lot of
nerve signals that we’ve been sending out to the body all day long. This
“purposeful” and directed releasing process “turns off” these signals and
causes the “muscle action” to let go.
As you read this
explanation, you will see what we’re really made up of, and how we can
make ourselves better in this way.
